CHANGCHUN (CEIS) -- Jingyu county in northeast china's Jilin province is known to many as "the American ginseng production base of China." The acreage of ginseng in the county has reached 570,000 sq m, which account for 23 percent of the country's total and 40 percent of the entire area of Jilin province. Each year, the county produces more than 20 tons of dehydrated American ginseng , over 50 tons of ginseng stems and leaves, and 5,000 kilograms of ginseng seeds. In 1994, the county made production records by turning out 2.34 kilograms of ginseng and 237 grams of ginseng seeds per sq m. In recent years, the county has also developed more than 20 types of ginseng products and established a medicine production factory. Jingyu plans to expand its ginseng growing areas to one million sq m by the end of this century.
