China has become the third largest ginseng producer in the world, after Canada and the United States and the largest consumer of it.
The country originally started to plant american ginseng 20 years ago, and now has a total ginseng growing area of nearly four million square meters. it produces more than 100 tons of dried ginseng annually.
In 1990, a research team under the chinese academy of agricultural sciences, started to study seed selection, cultivation, diseases and processing methods of american ginseng .
The research reached advanced world levels, and has remarkably contributed to the development of the American ginseng industry in china, according to Yang Jixiang, a professor at Jilin agricultural university. the research has passed the appraisal of an experts' committee headed by yang.
The research team has determined for the first time in the world, that the optimum water content in the soil during the full growth period of ginseng is 80 percent, and the gross water demand is 115 kg every sq m.
In addition, the research team has doubled the per unit output to 2.6 kg every sq m by using a high-yield technique.
As the largest American ginseng consumer in the world, China is consuming more than 60 percent of the world's total output.
