Changchun (CEIS) -- China has now become the third largest grower of American ginseng (panax qinquefolium) in the world. The country planted 2.5 million sq m of American ginseng last year, producing a total of about 80 tons. This year, the amount of land sown to American ginseng, which was Introduced to China from north America twenty years ago, has grown to between 3 million and 3.5 million sq m. China has set up four major production bases. Jilin, Heilong- Jiang and Liaoning provinces in northeast China make up the country's leading American ginseng production base, accounting for more than half of China's total production. Studies have shown that the Chinese version of American ginseng can serve as an alternative to the north American version, since it is almost equal in quality. In 1988, the ministry of public health approved the use of Chinese-grown American ginseng as an alternative to the imported American ginseng .
