Local Biotech Firm Invents Storage Technology

The latest creation by a Korean venture firm is a way to increase the shelf life of farm goods especially flowers.
Officials at Biosystech say the technology will allow roses to stay fresh for up to two weeks, around three to four times longer compared to the conventional way of storing them in water.
"The technique we've come up with will save money and cut down on overall losses that are a part of distribution," an official said.
For instance saving transportation costs by exporting goods by sea not air a benefit that's been seen in rose shipments to Japan.
The technology essentially involves combining special packaging techniques with protective gas.
That gas is derived from ordinary air and is said to minimize the production of ethylene the major cause for decomposition.

"This technology is now being used to keep flowers fresh but it will soon be used to preserve other perishables such as vegetables," the official continued.
Research is still going on with vegetables as well as fruits and fresh ginseng with results expected to be promising. "The technique we have developed will increase the exports of Korean agricultural products overseas.
Also it will create more farmhouse income and thirdly through exporting this technology, by setting up overseas branches we can get royalties and it would be a good chance to export Korean agricultural products like fresh ginseng."
Company officials say they plan to enable customers to buy flowers at convenience stores through their marketing strategies.
