CHINA-- Representatives from the Jilin Agriculture University, Shanghai Herbal Medicine Co., Ltd., and Beijing First American Development Center have been establishing standards for the quality classification of American ginseng products that are both domestically made and imported. The group expects to announce the world's first set of such standards by the end of the year. Covering five types of American ginseng --regular ginseng , activated ginseng , ginseng slices, ginseng chewing tablets, and bagged ginseng tea, the quality specifications will safeguard consumers' interests, promote the growth of China-made American ginseng , and tighten the control on the import of low-quality ginseng. Since 1988, China-made American ginseng has been listed in the Chinese pharmacopoeia as the Ministry of Health deemed its quality equal to that of imported ginseng. China produces 100- 150 tons of ginseng products per year, ranking third after Canada and the U.S. Reference: Xinhua, 07/31/97
